Rise of Nations suits players who like Age of Empires-style base building but want a longer strategic arc, with civilization advancement, territory control and diplomacy layered on top of the usual resource gathering and unit combat.
Before buying, check which version the key activates. Most stores sell the Extended Edition, a 2014 remaster distributed through Steam with widescreen resolution support and Steam Workshop for community maps, rather than the original 2003 release. Confirm the listing states Steam as the activation platform, since that determines whether achievements, Workshop content and matchmaking against other Steam owners will work. Rise of Nations is a real-time strategy game that blends city-building and army combat with the age-based progression of a 4X strategy title. Players guide a civilization from the Ancient Age through to the Information Age, developing farms, timber camps, mines and libraries to fund their cities while researching technologies that unlock new units and buildings. A distinctive feature is the territory border system: each city projects a zone of control, and armies outside friendly territory run through supply and lose strength over time, which pushes players to expand cities rather than rely on isolated bases far from home. Combat covers infantry, cavalry, artillery, ships and eventually aircraft, with each of the game's many nations carrying its own small bonuses and unique unit. Matches can be won by military conquest, by capturing an opponent's capital, or by racking up enough points before time runs out. The Extended Edition update added widescreen resolutions and Steam Workshop support for user-made maps and mods.
