Mount & Blade: Bannerlord

Bannerlord is one of those games that is genuinely difficult to put a neat label on. It is part medieval sandbox, part tactical battle simulator, part political strategy game, and it manages to be all three at once without any of them feeling like an afterthought. TaleWorlds spent nearly a decade in development before the full release, and while that wait frustrated a lot of fans, the finished product mostly justifies the patience.

The core loop is straightforward enough: you start from nothing, recruit a warband, and slowly carve out a place for yourself in the fractured continent of Calradia. But the way that plays out is different every single time. One run you might spend thirty hours trading goods between cities and quietly bankrolling a workshop empire before raising a banner. Another run you are knee-deep in siege warfare by day three. The game rarely pushes you in a direction, which is both its biggest strength and the thing most likely to confuse newcomers.

The battles are the star of the show

Whatever else you think about Bannerlord, the real-time battles are something special. Commanding a few hundred soldiers on a field while also actively fighting yourself, switching between giving orders and swinging a sword, never really gets old. The cavalry charges in particular have a weight and momentum to them that very few games match. If you have ever watched a medieval film and thought you wanted to be in the middle of that chaos, this is the closest a game has come to scratching that itch.

The individual combat is solid rather than exceptional. It is not as refined as something like Mordhau or Chivalry 2, but it does not need to be, because the scale around you makes up for it. You are rarely just fighting one person.

It does not hold your hand, and that is by design

New players will bounce off Bannerlord if they go in expecting a traditional RPG experience. There is a main quest involving the Dragon Banner, but it is deliberately understated. The game wants you to write your own story, and if you are not comfortable with a bit of early flailing, the first ten hours can feel a bit thankless. Stick with it. The moment things click and you start actually understanding the economy, the clan management, and the politics between kingdoms, it becomes genuinely absorbing.

It is also worth knowing that the modding community for this game is extraordinary. Once you have a playthrough or two under your belt, mods like Diplomacy and various overhaul projects add a serious amount of life to subsequent runs.

Is This Game Right For You?

At around £15, which is where you can currently pick it up through the sellers we list, Bannerlord is an easy recommendation. This is a game with well over a hundred hours of content if you engage with all its systems, and that is before mods enter the picture. The full RRP on Steam is notably higher, so if you have been sitting on the fence, the current pricing is a decent nudge to finally pull the trigger.

The War Sails DLC is also worth keeping an eye on if you enjoy the base game. It adds naval raiding and coastal warfare, which opens up a whole new side of the Calradia map that the base game does not touch. It is not essential on your first playthrough, but it is a meaningful expansion rather than the kind of thin content drop that gives DLC a bad name.

If you like open-world sandboxes with real strategic depth, medieval history, or just the fantasy of leading an army you built yourself from scratch, Bannerlord is worth your time. It is not a game for people who want a polished narrative experience or clear direction. But for patient players who enjoy making their own goals, it is one of the most satisfying games in its genre.
